A Tight-knit Group

Sumner Stone set out to create a group of typefaces that would work together effortlessly. His solution, the superfamily of ITC Stone Sans, ITC Stone Serif, and ITC Stone Informal, is a digital printing trifecta. The typefaces share similar heights, weights, and proportions. Each comes in three weights (medium, semibold, bold) with accompanying italics. A 2010 reworked version of ITC Stone Sans includes a condensed width and spans from light to extra bold. Outside the immediate family, ITC Stone Humanist, designed in 2005, brings out handwritten influences with its tapered terminals and double-story lowercase. It is uncannily similar to ITC Stone Sans, so only use it as an alternative.

itc stone sans (Sumner Stone, 1987)

ITC Stone Sans, an interpretation of a humanist sans, tackles the difficulty of pairing typefaces that were designed independently of each other. Stone exudes strength with its slightly condensed proportions and angled terminals, and stands out for its straight
Q tail and minimal G. While originally intended for beginners, Stone Sans is useful to designers of all levels, because it is especially legible for informational graphics and on low-resolution devices like laser printers.

itc stone serif (Sumner Stone, 1987)

ITC Stone Serif, Stone Sans' accompanying serif, is a transitional serif with bracketed serifs and an equally high x-height and long width. The straight tail of the Q echoes that of the Sans. Stone Serif displays sufficient contrast between thick and thin strokes (especially noticeable in the capital A), but it still serves as a sturdy face for business correspondence and body copy.

itc stone informal (Sumner Stone, 1987)

ITC Stone Informal is the casual companion to Stone Sans thanks to its upright italic and handwritten influence (seen particularly in the lowercase a and g). Classified as a clarendon, Stone Informal has low stroke contrast and soft stroke endings that make it a relatable, typewriter-face option. Stone Informal is full of poise and used widely in a commercial setting.
